The Next Act for Apeel
“U.S. produce coating company recovers after misinformation claims.”
“U.S. produce coating company recovers after misinformation claims.” That recent headline from Fresh Plaza is a testament to a hard-fought battle.
For the past three years, we have been working toward a comeback. When the misinformation campaign against Apeel first began, we believed that ignoring the noise would allow it to burn out. Instead, we learned a difficult lesson about how easily viral narratives can disrupt free enterprise.
After a wave of online accounts falsely linked Apeel’s plant-based protection to harmful ingredients—causing us to nearly disappear from U.S. grocery shelves—we are reclaiming our momentum. Last month, The Free Press detailed exactly how that crisis unfolded, noting: “All it took was two Facebook posts to turn an online mob against Apeel Sciences and its booming business of keeping food fresh longer.”
While the attacks have not stopped, our response strategy has completely evolved since 2023. We are actively committed to ensuring everyone has access to produce that is fresher, tastier, and more nutritious without relying on heavy chemical treatments or energy-intensive cold chains. We will not let coordinated digital campaigns dictate the future of food.
In a recent appearance on TBPN, our founder discussed the drive to bring Apeel’s advanced infrastructure back to the forefront of the American market. Technology is rapidly transforming every major global industry—except food. Apeel is the tech-forward solution the industry needs, and we are inviting partners across the domestic supply chain to join us in building a more resilient network.
We have fundamentally shifted our operational model to make this future a reality. Featured in Fast Company, CEO Luiz Beling shared how we evolved our operations to better serve our partners. By introducing automated, cost-effective application systems built for post-harvest packhouses, we are removing operational friction for suppliers while ensuring consistency for grocers as we efficiently scale our footprint.
Apeel stands alone by pairing advanced plant-based formulations with SaaS solutions that digitize fruit quality. Speaking with AgFunder News about this complementary technology ecosystem, James Rogers noted that the intense online scrutiny actually sparked an unexpected shift: consumers are starting to look closer at the grocery store, questioning the practices that have long been the industry norm.
The goal is to provide a clear, technical alternative to that decades-long reliance on synthetic coatings. “My dream is to be able to walk into grocery stores that I used to in the United States and see our product benefit Americans, but I would like to see Apeel replacing these waxes and synthetic pesticides around the world,” Rogers noted. By introducing plant-based protection, we can fundamentally change how food quality is managed and verified before it ever hits the shelf.
Over the last few months, we have also tracked a distinct shift in how the broader business community confronts digital disinformation. The landscape is changing, and companies are fighting back. It is rewarding to see the narrative framework we forged serve as a blueprint for other innovators determined to defend their operations and protect the truth.
Surviving a coordinated digital attack requires a willingness to engage on every front. We are optimistic about the path ahead, clear-eyed about the challenges, and fully committed to the work. Over the coming weeks and months, expect to hear more about Apeel’s next chapter, new technologies, and goals and ambitions to partner with growers, suppliers, and grocers to change the future of produce.
– The Apeel Team
Food Fight is a space for honest conversation about the post-harvest industry, the challenges created by coordinated disinformation, and the work Apeel Sciences is doing to restore trust and choice in the food system. We focus on transparency, science, and American innovation, sharing updates, context, and insights that help explain what is on our food and why it matters. Our mission is to help build a future where consumers have clearer information, better options, and a food system that reflects both integrity and progress.

I would love to know more about Apeel. What is the coating actually made from and what is the processing used to create the coating. I think people would not be so hesitant if Apeel was more forthcoming with the ingredients and processing. The vague language used around it makes it seem like a scam.
